The Department of General Surgery provides service to Region 2 Hospital Authority, which extends from St. Stephen to Sussex, New Brunswick. The hospitals in Sussex and St .Stephen refer secondary or tertiary care to Saint John as well as emergency care when the attending surgeons in those communities are not available.
Six surgeons provide surgical service to Saint John. The specialty services provided include peripheral vascular, thoracic, and hepatobiliary surgery. In addition, concentrated areas of expertise exist in critical care, breast disease, nutritional support and clinical epidemiology.
The elective student may choose to concentrate the experience in any of the specialty or subspecialty areas or may choose to partake in a wide range of surgical diseases. A significant portion of learning comes from being on-call. It is expected that the student would take call on average of 1 night in 4.
