Family Medicine

Dr. Sanji Thomas, Clinical Head
Dr. Sasha Sealy, Director of Residency Training

The Family Medicine Teaching Unit is located downtown in the newly renovated Community Health Centre. This is a collaborative environment where physicians work along side nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, dieticians, pharmacists, etc. The goal is excellence in patient care, delivered in a team approach.

This innovative clinical program partners with the Community Health Centre to focus on primary care education, and to build a healthier community through addressing the determinants of health.

Other exciting projects in the FMTU include shared mental health, outreach clinics for disadvantaged populations, women's health, sexual health and addictions management. The clinic is a pilot project for state of the art patient care technology, and also emphasizes population health research. The roster of patients is also served by our emphasis on providing palliative care, obstetrical care and inpatient care.

Faculty participate in training new physicians in numerous ways.  Teaching learners in their offices, presenting curriculum, acting as Faculty Advisors to residents.  Facutly also provide primary medical care to learners rotating throug Saint John, serving in on the Teaching Units executive board and more.

Whether in the FMTU or in a community preceptor's office, there are ample opportunities to participate in Journal Club, family medicine teaching rounds, seminars, and chart rounds. Supplementary experiences in the myriad of health disciplines can be easily arranged. Comprehensive libraries and easily accessed online resources add to the stimulating learning environment.
