Laboratory Medicine

Dr. Marek Godlewski, Clinical Head

The Department of Laboratory Medicine offers a comprehensive service in anatomical pathology (including Electron Microscopy, Cytology and Autopsy Pathology) and in the clinical pathology areas of clinical Biochemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine and Microbiology.

Laboratories are located in the Saint John Regional Hospital, the Charlotte County Hospital and the Sussex Health Center. The Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH) laboratory performs tests in all major specialties, whereas work in the outlying laboratories is confined to common chemistry and hematology tests and basic blood transfusion medicine.

The department has 13 Dalhousie faculty members, all of whom actively participate in teaching. In addition to one-on-one teaching, weekly and monthly multidisciplinary rounds are held in pathology.

Each elective is tailored to meet the needs of the undergraduate or postgraduate trainee. This could range from a broad practical experience to a specific area of interest.
