Orthopaedic Surgery

Dr. Stephen Connolly, Clinical Head
Dr. James Wagg, Director of Residency Training

The Orthopaedic Department has had full department status for many years. We operate a Regional Trauma Center in conjunction with General Surgery and Neurosurgery, which is the only fully qualified Trauma Center in the province of New Brunswick. This is supported by access to an integrated Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Unit system. For more routine and elective surgery, we have a separate Orthopedic Unit consisting of 36 beds, with a planned expansion to 38 beds. We have associated with that both a physiotherapy facility and a teaching lecture room area. Both of these areas are fully equipped with assistance from Hip, Hip Hooray fund raising, in which we have been very active over the last 8 years. The Orthopaedic Unit is run under a Unit Manager with a charge nurse on each shift. Orthopaedic physician compliment consists of 5 active orthopaedic surgeons and one part-time senior orthopaedic surgeon.

Besides having a full elective orthopaedic day of surgery, we have 2 days in the operating room for fracture time. Each orthopaedic surgeon carries on an active clinic from emergency and post-operative patient care in both the SJRH and at St. Joseph's Hospital as well.

The St. Joseph's Hospital site carries on a full day of day surgery for each orthopaedic surgeon, and each also has a private orthopaedic practice. Two of the orthopaedic surgeons do a monthly clinic in St. Stephen and Sussex.

There is time and opportunity for providing a meaningful learning experience in all of these settings. We maintain a friendly and open attitude.
