St.Stephen - Community
St. Stephen, population 5,000, is conveniently located with access to major cities in Atlantic Canada and the Eastern United States, and is a hub for many forest-related businesses in Charlotte County.
The town boasts tree-lined streets, beautiful historic homes and new subdivisions, a bustling downtown core and friendly, caring people.
One of the town's largest employers is Ganong Bros. Ltd. James and Gilbert Ganong grew up in rural New Brunswick and, after leaving home to pursue separate careers, they decided to move to St. Stephen and go into business together. They opened a General Store in 1873 and found success by adding homemade candy - then a specialty item - to the list of wares for sale. Ganong Bros. Ltd. grew, and by 1930 the company was a major corporation employing 700 people. St. Stephen's Chocolate Museum tells the story of the Ganong brothers and the history of chocolate making in the town through chocolate-making demonstrations, hands-on exhibits, candy-making equipment, and a unique collection of chocolate boxes. They also celebrate this delicious piece of their history with a week-long Chocolate Fest each August.
